On this site, we will highlight Community Events or Activities that are not necessarily related to Whitman Middle School. We hope to broaden our community outreach with this site. This is our attempt to help provide information about opportunities in the larger area.
Props Lacrosse is open to all grades 3-8 in the Ballard/ Ingraham/ Nathan Hale catchment zones for recreational lacrosse for the Spring 2023 Season. We welcome all players but adhere to the boys' rules & equipment. We are a volunteer run rec-program that is committed to being a supportive environment for all our boys. Our emphasis is on good sportsmanship, effort and fun. All new and returning players are welcome. No prior experience necessary, regardless of age. We offer financial aid for the program which can include dues/ uniform and loaner equipment for first time players. We are committed to making sure any boys who want to play with us have the opportunity.
Lacrosse is one of the fastest growing sports in America, and Seattle. It is a great sport from a young age, physical contact is limited to age-appropriate levels throughout the program. The sport involves running, agility and hand-eye coordination. It’s very exciting to watch and play!
Practices start in February and are twice a week at Whitman Middle School or Loyal Heights Playfield. Games begin in March on Saturdays. Registration is open until practices begin.
For more information, please visit the club page: http://www.propslacrosse.org/
If you have any questions about our lacrosse program, please feel free to reach out to the club directly via email (propslacrosse@outlook.com) or inquire in the ‘contact’ page on our website.
Building brain muscle is a lifetime goal! People who have a growth mindset understand that even if they struggle with certain skills, their abilities aren’t set in stone. They believe that with work, their skills can improve over time.
Educator Greg Smith will share how parents/guardians can help build a growth mindset and support student executive function skills at the BHS PTSA General Meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 2 in the Library.
What is Executive Function (EF) and how can you support your student’s EF growth? The Executive Function skills help all of us make short- and long-term decisions. They help us with impulse control. They help us plan and organize.
If your student seems to be struggling in these areas and you are wondering how you can support them, Greg Smith, owner of Northwest Educational Services, will be presenting on Thursday, Feb. 2 at 7 p.m. in the BHS Library. Bring your questions. Greg looks forward to engaging with you!
*Chemistry (to make a love potion!)
*Medicine (to learn all about the heart and even get to see a real pig heart if they are interested!)
*Art (to make Valentines for their loved ones & learn about the science behind Shrinky-dinks while making heart-shaped keychains for backpacks!)
*Robotics (a local high school's robotics team will challenge students to drive the robot in a heart-shaped path!)
*Engineering (students will build and test out their candy catapults!)
Students will also be fed a pizza dinner with carrot sticks, applesauce, and have the opportunity to decorate some heart-shaped cookies! There will also be a photo booth with fun props and all students will get to take home a Polaroid picture! Parents/guardians are welcome to drop off or they can stay for the fun with their student(s)!
We would love your help in spreading the word! Scholarships are available through an application on our website and there is also a sibling discount!

We have also recently opened our Summer Camp registration!
We are offering two weeks of STEAM Academy camps at Bellevue College: July 10th-14th & July 17th-21st (each week will be different!)
We are also offering one week of outdoor camp (A Wise Adventure) at Newport Heights Elementary School in Bellevue: July 17th-21st
We will be offering exciting new STEAM stations this summer for returners (and of course bringing back all the favorites like "Dazzling Demos!") that will be sure to excite our campers! All campers will receive a catered lunch each day as well as a camp t-shirt and plenty of souvenirs! Ages: Pre-K through entering 8th grade, scholarships available (scholarship form available on our website!). Camps are full day: 8:30-3:30 p.m., with after care available.
I know everyone says it, but don't wait to register because we do sell out due to limited space! If registered by January 31st, campers receive a VIP gold lanyard which gets them perks like a faster lunch line and extra carnival tickets!
We work on bodyweight movements (squats, planks), gymnastics (pullups, handstands), and older kids will do light barbell movements (back squats, deadlifts, overhead presses, but only after they’ve established good form without weight).
CrossFit is great functional fitness that can be tailored to each kid's ability, whether they're a three-sport athlete or someone who's not into sports at all.
Class for ages 7-11 runs from 2-2:45 p.m. and ages 11-15 from 3:15-4 p.m. on Wednesdays. Cost is $105+tax (Note that the class times work for Seattle Public Schools early dismissal on Wednesdays. If those times don’t work for you, please take our survey - https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/GV59D2H - on other days and times and hopefully we’ll be able to add another day in the near future.)

Rainier Beach High School graduate Ifrah Abshir and her organization, Blkpatch, are working to raise enough money to provide one culturally inclusive first aid kit with a 40-minute training to each Rainier Beach High School student before winter break, when many students won't have access to health care and emergency services through schools. Ifrah was instrumental in the Orca card campaign to get free Orca cards to SPS students. The Orca card campaign started at Rainier Beach and was expanded across the district. Similarly, Blkpatch is starting with this distribution pilot at Rainier Beach High School to prove the concept to the City of Seattle, with a goal of expanding it across the district. Our focus is advocating for the students through advocacy. Membership helps us have more votes and a bigger voice. We hope you will join our efforts at Whitman Middle School PTSA.
